Grapeshot you're not smarter than CCP Posted: 13 Feb 2019 07:02 AM PST As a retired Eve player watching the reddit rage from the PVP servers. The first step to is acknowledging a handful of developers are not smarter than the entire player base. One thing CCP realized very early on was unintended consequences. Players will always out think you when it comes to changes, 9 times of 10 they will find a way to exploit what you changed and you must realize that and they will do it faster than it took you to code the change. The second step in recovery is realize that there is nothing you can do to counter balance offline raiding, there's no AI or defense that is going to be "smart" enough and also be balanced to an attacking force. Really acceptance is needed here. The third step is to realize that you've got to step back and say ok, I need to look at this from an entirely different angle. If The only way to create a persistent universe where people can actually go to sleep at night, then wake up and go to work the next day, then come home and enjoy the game that appeals to all players is to create a staggered region system. Yes look to Eve's PVE Space(Empire) Lawless (Low-Sec), and Null-Sec (PVP) region type design. Not only do that but stroll around some of the unofficial PVE/PVP servers, hope on the ones that have discords and chat up the players you'll find are surprisingly happy with the game (because they don't have to deal with all or nothing PVP). Please note, these are just some guiding thoughts on what actually worked because I don't think any of you developers have spent any real time in a persistent universe before.
These are just some ideas off the top of my head having my morning coffee. The big thing is being able to entirely wipe out everything someone has overnight is not fun game play, there's zero reason to invest - hardcore is a very small subset of players, not enough to sustain development from a cash flow perspective. I wouldn't ever go near the shit show that is the PVP servers. I'm enjoying life too much on the unofficials to deal with tthe official "all or nothing" nightmare. [link] [comments]
Weirdest base defense I have encountered. Posted: 13 Feb 2019 04:19 AM PST I was raiding this guys base when I saw his animal pen off in the distance a bit. Thought to myself well I might as well get his games since I was having a hard time getting through his 2 layer wall while fighting him off at the same time. Go over to his pen door which was oddly made of thatch. Broke it down and rushed in only to see its full of bunnies and monkeys set to aggressive. IT WAS A TRAP ALL ALONG! I ran out of there but couldn't escape the DOT from the poop and the speed of the rabbits. GG bunny and monkey guy. GG. [link] [comments]

Posted: 13 Feb 2019 09:20 AM PST It's nice that you have extreme conditions that happen every few hours, but let's get a little more realistic. The bottom of the water shouldn't be below 3c or 37f. I get you want people to know it's cold down there, but when it's -10f, the water would be frozen. Polar region shouldn't experience rain on land, it's -20f (-29c) and would be too cold to even snow. This is a giant annoyance. Tropics shouldn't see temperatures at 150f (66c) degrees, this just isn't realistic. Animals shouldn't exist in climates they can't reproduce in. I see bears, but cubs die instantly when tempatures get to 150 degrees. How are bears spawning if they can't keep cubs alive? Let's fix the climates a bit [link] [comments]
Offline Grief Protection -- Attn: Developers & Modders Posted: 13 Feb 2019 10:58 AM PST The Problem: Extremely small groups of players have the ability to sink and destroy whole fleets of ships and assets in a matter of minutes with very little risk or hinderance to oppose them even if ships at anchor are protected by NPC crew or aggressive tames. Griefers are able to take advantage of this against solo and small groups when they are offline and even large companies during off-peak play hours. Possible Solution: Addition of two new structures and a dedicated NPC to the game.
Features: Both the Crew Barracks and Quartermaster's Stations have inventory to hold armor, melee weapons, firearms and ammunition in the same manner as a ship resource box with unlimited space and high stack values. Both stations must be manned by an "Officer of the Watch" NPC that is only attainable from Freeport crew vendors for gold. Both stations require gold in their inventory to function and cost a variable amount of gold per hour like NPC crew. Function: When an enemy player approaches within the detection range of a manned Barracks or Quartermaster Station, the Officer of the Watch will alert the company and appear on the ATLAS map to indicate an enemy is present at their location. The structure will spawn NPC crew much the same way a treasure map spawns the Army of the Dead to engage and repel the intruder(s). The number of NPC's spawned will be equal to the level of the Officer of the Watch. The NPC's will be armed with the weapons and supplies from the structures' inventory until that inventory is depleted. The structure will spawn new NPC's as they are killed to maintain the appropriate number of active NPC's. When the structure runs out of supplies, it will no longer spawn additional NPC's. If the enemy disengages, the appearance of the station on the ATLAS map will indicate the alert no longer exists and the station is no longer spawning NPC's. Any remaining spawned NPC's will depsawn over time. When all NPC's have depsawned, the station will be removed from the ATLAS map to indicate the station has stood down. The structures' ability to alert the company and indicate an incursion on the ATLAS map will continue to function unless the structure runs out of gold or the Officer of the Watch is killed. Summary: The purpose of this suggestion is to specifically help provide a deterrent to low-risk griefing. This suggestion would allow players to provide a rapid response to enemy intruders regardless of the size of their company, alliance or even if they are not online. In addition to the rapid response benefit, this concept would also provide an in-game mechanic to notify company and alliance members to the locations of enemy actions so that online players can respond and engage in active PVP and provide more satisfying gameplay and immersion for both attackers and defenders. Posted: 13 Feb 2019 07:52 AM PST Day 1 I woke the sounds of cannons, screams and the smell of smoke as our home became enflamed. I launched myself from my cot, my body instantly awake and alert from fear. I ran down the hall towards my siblings. I slipped on the hard wood, catching myself just before my face could hit the floor. My feet slid as I tried to stand, fear making my body slow to respond. Finally i got to my feet and tore down the hall. I had to get to my brother's and sisters. Throwing open the door, I found them huddled with Mother. "Lyre! Hurry to your Father!" My Mother's voice was frantic as she grabbed little Wren from her crib. My brothers were holding each other, their eyes wide in their faces. While my little sister began packing up clothes. "Mother what's-" "Not now Lyre! That fire has already caught the barn! Now go!" I nodded once before taking off back down the hall and running flown the stairs. As soon as I opened the front door the smell of burnt flesh assaulted my lungs. I looked toward town and felt my body freeze up. The whole town was ablaze. I could hear screaming and crys coming from beyond the wall. I stood transfixed, we lived right outside of town and yet even our home had caught. To see it all ablaze, I should be in tears but all I seemed able to do was stare. "Tell us where it is old boy. There's no need to drag your family into this. " I ducked around the side of the house, hiding along the wall and the bush next to the cellar. The barn was blown to pieces, already up in flames and I could hear the panicked screams of the horses. My father was on his knees before a group of men. No. Not men. Pirates. Townsfolk whispered of pirates. Superstition was that to openly speak of pirates was to invite them. Poppy cock Mother had always said. Yet there they stood, I knew they were pirates. They weren't with the Naval Officers, and to say they weren't apart of the Merchant Guild would be putting it mildly. They were filthy. Their clothes were ragged, yet their weapons shined in the flames light. At least eight of them were before my Father, one stood closer than the rest. He was leaning down, his face close and I realized he held a knife to my father's throat. Fear spiked through my gut, the feeling making my heart race and my hands shake. "Even if I told you, you'd never reach it. It's not meant for men like you. " The men laughed, it wasn't a pleasant sound. Their laughter was hoarse and loud. My father's face stayed passive, he merely watched. The men stopped laughing and the leader leaning back taking the knife back from my father's throat. I sighed, relieved. The man suddenly launched forward, hitting my father's face with his fist closed around the handle of the knife. My father fell to the side but righted himself quickly. He spat on the ground and I noticed blood running down his chin. "Father..." I felt tears gathering but forced myself to keep watching. If I could distract them, maybe it'd be enough for father to escape. "To proud, you always were. To proud..." the leader prowled a around my father, looking up at the house he involved his head to his men. "Hiram, Aryan. Go see if you can round up some encouragement. " I looked around me for something, anything to use. A water pail sat beside the cellar. It was old, and as I recalled had holes but it would work. I picked it up and got to my feet. Backing up as I did so I began to bang on the bottom. "Over here you cowards! Come on! Frightened of a girl?! " Fathers head swung to me and I could see the horror fill his face. Sorry father. I turned on my heel and shot forward, running toward the treeline out front. I heard them shouting behind me but paid little mind. I'd run these forests as soon as I could walk. I ran through the brush, dodging trees and leaping over fallen logs. My sleeping gown was ungainly and caught at times but I tore through the foliage, because I knew, if they caught me, I was dead. I rounded the old oak that marked the end of the thin bit of first and began the start of the truly wild edge that surrounded our town, the other side buffered by the ocean. My breath came fast and I focused on slowing them down. If I kept gasping I'd be heard. I felt something tug at my gown and I felt my lungs catch. Looking down I saw Kit. Tears sprung to my eyes, of course he'd find me. I grabbed him up and pressed my face into his scruff. Mother had disapproved of the little fox kit I'd taken in, but he'd been injured and alone. Father always taught us to be kind and to defend the weak. I'd hidden him in my room but as he'd healed and grown there'd been no hiding him. Kit buried has face in my hair and I breathed a moment of relief only to lock up as I remembered why I was running. I set him down and pointed toward the deep part of the forest. "Kit. Go hunt. " He titled his head to the side, his ears tilting towards me. "Go Kit." He chirped at me and I leaned back down shushing him as I grabbed him back up. "Fine. But if we both get killed it's not my fault." Kit nuzzled my face happily. "Yes, yes. Your a fine little fox. " my smile slid from my face as I heard a twig break. I quickly tucked him in my arms and leaned around the tree. Four of the pirates were walking amongst the trees. They were loud and I could tell they either weren't trying to be quiet or didn't know how to be among the dense foliage. "It's bad luck, that's what it is. " A pirate closer than I liked was saying. He was obviously older, the liberal white in his hair giving away his age. "Shut it Faryn. No one wants to listen to you blatherin' on. " This was said by a dark fellow, hair pitch black and his skin a slightly lighter shade. The one I now knew as Faryn drew himself up as much as his stooped frame windswept allow. "I'll have you know Kain, I was pillaging before you'd pulled your mouth off your mama's tits!" Kain merely gruffed at the old man and continued looking. They were drawing closer and I pulled myself tighter to the tree at my back. "All I'm saying is we don't have much to go on. All we got are some rumors and a bit of parchment." Faryn stopped to grab his skin and took a long draught. "If the Capn's wrong we'll have wasted all these years and brought the Naval down on our hides. They don't take to kindly to their settlements being attacked. " Kain sighed. "Look, Capn' used to sail with old pathfinder, hear? " I could hear Faryn halt his steps, just as my breath caught. Father used to sail? But father hates the sea, he wouldn't even let us swim in it. "The pathfinder? " Faryn's tone of awe gave me pause and I found myself leaning closer trying to hear. "One and the same, stories go he was the most blood thirsty flying the colors. " Faryn's eyes took on a feverish gleam. "And the tales? The ones about the -!" Kain had spun around and clamped his hands over the old man's mouth. I grimaced, the old man had a beard well below his chest and it was rubbed yellow and brown though obviously it should have been white. He looked like a scraggly sheep. I shuddered in disgust but felt myself led closer, Father never spoke much of his time before Mother and I couldn't resist my curiosity to know more. "Speak one more word and I'll run you through. " Faryn's eyes grew wide, as did mine. He nodded quickly and pulled himself from the ebony skinned man's grasp. Kain nodded to him and began to turn, I realized that as I'd leaned forward I'd put myself right in their line of sight. I panicked and tried to pull back but there was no need. Cannons went off, once, twice, and thrice. "That'll be the Naval coming in. Back to the ship. " They both turned back to the house and I sagged against my tree. I hugged Kit close as I waited. I waited an hour or so before I began my trek back, cautious. As I neared the treeline and looked towards the horse my chest tightened. Or house, and the barn was near crumbled to the ground. I felt my eyes water, but I stared to the sky defiant. I would not cry. I walked forward, scanning my surroundings as I went, but when I neared the barn cayton fled. My father lay slumped on the ground. I dashed forward turning and pulling him to my lap. He was soaked in blood. I patted his cheeks. "Father! Please... please wake up..." Fathers eyes fluttered and I smiled with relief. I could feel Kit nudging my side, stiffed I'd dropped him in my haste. "My little minnow. Thank the sea your safe." He raised his hand to my cheek but it fell back to his side, to weak to holds his arm up. "Father I-" he shushed me, a pained look on his face as he weakly pulled at his jacket. I placed his hand away and reached into the inside pocket where he'd always hid hers tobacco from Mama. Instead of the smoky grass, I felt warm metal. I pulled it out to see a compass. One unlike what they traded at market. It was large, and had notches in its side like it'd once held gems. How had Father hidden this? It was heavy and I could see no way he'd had it on has person without it being noticed. "Lyre... there's so much. So much... I wish I... could have told you... About our people, about yourself..." his breathing was slowing and my eyes widened. "Father please, hold on I'll find Mama! She'll patch you up!" "Lyre!" I jerked. Father had never raised his voice before, to any of us. He coughed and I could see blood leaking from the corner of his mouth. "Lyre, take the compass. Wish for it to be unseen. Guard it and find the stones. " "Father what-" my voice cut short as a hands grabbed a fist full of my hair and yanked me back. I couldn't prevent the cry that left my lips. I was dragged back as the leader from before sauntered forward. "I had a feeling you wouldn't return with a little persuasion. " he smirked as he stood over my father. Placing his boot on my father's chest he pulled his sword and thrust it into my father's gut. He twisted it, watching my face with a mad glee. Horror flooded me. I tried to launch myself forward but whomever held me had a tight grip. "Father! Papa!" My shouts only seemed to amuse them. Kit growled and launched himself at whomever was behind me, I heard him curse as he kicked Kit away. Kit chirped angrily and looked to be about to go for him again. "Halt Kit! " Kit stopped, his head tilting in confusion. "Go hunt! " Kit sat down, staring at me. "Go!" Finally he slunk off towards the trees but I jerked in fear when a glint of metal caught my eye. He was going to shoot Kit! "Kit go! Run! " Kit speed up and my stomach churned as the pistol beside my face went off. My ears rung but I was relieved to see Kit dart into the trees. He missed. Thank you Lord. My ears were still ringing as the leader leaned into my face, he must have come towards me while I'd been distracted. He was saying something, I couldn't tell what. He leered at me and ran his hands down my sides gripping my hips. Revulsion tore through me as I began to jerk myself away. I spat in his face. He pulled away sharply, rubbing the spit off his face. He merely smiled at me. Terror once more pulsed through me. Two of his men who'd been standing to the side came forward and cuffed me. The iron was heavy and I could feel it already rubbing. A kick to my knees had me kneeling before them. The leader grabbed his knife and I stiffened. He took over holding my hair pulling it tighter. He tilted my head and I clenched shut my eyes as he began sawing off my hair. Tears formed, but I held them back. I wouldn't give them the satisfaction. Once my head laid bare I was hauled over a shoulder, carried through town. Everywhere bodies laid strewn. Men, women even children and babes. Everyone. The smell of copper and gunpowder burned my nose and twisted my stomach. I heaved, losing last night's supper down the leader's back. He dropped me, yelling but my hearing was still muffled. He gestured to Kain and I was once more picked up like a sack of grain. I saw nothing of the ship, only the plank leading up, and the deck below. I twisted my face to the side and as far up as I could, but all I could see was a flash of red. No mercy. Yet here I was. Alive. Nausea turned my stomach, I knew what pirates did with the women they captured. I'll die first. I was dropped onto the deck and forgotten. The ship had been out to sea for days. The leader ignored me, only Faryn came near me. Small amounts of water and moldy bread were the only food given to me. Though I was thankful, better than starving to death. As the days passed we sailed into dark waters, still waters. Fog rolled in enclosing us in a thick blanket of cloud and the men grew tense. If fear had a taste it would be of piss, because that's all I smelt at the first haunting note was sung. I could see the men around me tense up even further before their muscles all relaxed. They're faces slid into black expressions, like they'd been sedated. Fear touched my mind but a moment. There were words in the song, but they slid from my mind like oil. All around me the men were walking towards the sides of the ship. I jumped when I heard a splash to my left. He jumped in! Another splash had me jerking around to my right. I watch in horror and mild fascination as men climbed over the sides and jumped into the sea. Soon, I was alone. The song continued until with an angry shriek, it ended. Silence. I'd fallen asleep but was woken as the winds began to swirl and I felt a tingle slide across my skin. The clouds above me swirled. I felt fear and dread sunk into my bones. Cyclones. The townsfolk spoke of the cyclones, how they'd appear out of nowhere, sinking ships before the sailors could even turn to escape. The first cyclone came down striking the ship and spinning it out of control. I'm going to drown. Here, alone. I'd learned to swim, father had taken us to the lakes further inland but I was cuffed and there would be no way to keep myself afloat with the waves as angry and raging as they were. The ship kept being spun as more cyclones came down. My body was flying around in the ship, my head knocked into the mast and spots danced behind my eyes. I heard a chirp and fought to find the sound, but my vision was blurry and thoughts slow. Kit? No, he was back home. Safe. Along with Mother, Wren, Lorel and the twins. I felt my body lifted, and felt naught but air until a rush of cold and wet surrounded me. A passing thought to fight, to survive slid sluggishly but was quickly buried beneath the need to sleep. Darkness engulfed me. [link] [comments]

I don't feel Grapeshot values it's players time, money, or effort put into its products. Posted: 13 Feb 2019 08:50 AM PST I don't feel Grapeshot values it's players time, money, or effort put into its products. I've become extremely disenchanted by the way the Developers are starting to handle in-game issues, glitches, and bugs. We have players quitting by the thousands, and leaving the game with negative reviews daily. The need for more in-game GM support has become increasingly apparent. Just this morning a friend tried to merge his company, game bugs out and recruits him instead of merging the companies. Now he's SOL. No access to his ships, tames, etc. We all submit tickets to the GMs and PM Amber, Dollie, and Jat on Discord to make them aware of this game breaking bug. Instead of getting a quick reply of we'll get this prioritized with a GM and get it fixed asap. We get this nonsense.
📷 Last week we lost a Brig to a bug where the ship just stopped in the middle of the ocean with full wind to SOTD. When we report it....we get this BS.
📷 ^, In other words, your time invested in the game means nothing to Jat or Grapeshot at the end of the day. PvP is PvP. But when it comes to game breaking bugs on Grapeshots part, the team can and should be addressing those issues the same day. Grapeshot shouldn't be allowed to call Atlas a MMO if they aren't willing to put in the effort to have proper MMO customer Service GM's. It wouldn't be so bad if the Grapeshot team answered all tickets in a timely manner, however it takes days, or weeks to get a simple reply. Which is unprofessional from a customer service point of view, and leaves players feeling worthless. So they leave the game. While I understand the game is EA, it seems to be the common thing to lean on the EA crutch when things go south, and Grapeshot just doesn't want to put further investment into its team manpower to properly address issues. Wildshot's™ track record with customer support is not what one might call confidence inspiring when one looks at Ark, and by contrast that was a game where they could offload a lot of the support function onto private server owners (Last time I played Ark, it was as one of those private server owners and private servers outnumbered officials by a factor of 45 to 1). Atlas as an MMO centered around a handful of vast official servers expected to support the bulk of the game's population will not be able to get away with such lackluster support levels. If support response times are lackluster when the player base is shrinking during Early Access ( a period where one would expect a conscientious developer to provide increased support staff owing to higher instances of bugs and glitches), that does not bode well for what kind of support one might expect further down the road if player base and activity levels rise. Further GrapeCard cannot plausibly plead poverty the way many independent studios can when trying to get their new game off the ground. Stiglietz and Co. sitting on a rather sizeable pile of cash generated from Ark's out of nowhere runaway success for 3 years should be able to afford greater customer service staffing than just about anything short of a AAA studio. The minute one pays for a product, one has the right to expect to be treated like a customer. Testers in free alpha and beta trials of times gone by could not reasonably expect support. In a paid EA, one should certainly expect to encounter bugs and glitches, but to say that one should expect unprofessional levels of CS response times just because it is EA is ignoring the difference between free trials and paid. If Wildshot™ does not want to provide reasonable levels of CS support during EA, let them make EA free. They are not broke, sitting on 3 years of Top 10 steam levels of revenue from Ark. Failing to provide professional levels of CS in a paid product, EA or no, is not excusable. Instead, they'd rather lose players. [link] [comments]

Atlas is a great game, held back by misguided dev team and community. Posted: 13 Feb 2019 01:25 AM PST I won't make this a wall of text, I need not bore you with what you already know. (I don't like to write game related topics in long form, anyway.) I've been playing this game a while. I am in a big company that is also part of AoP. I am also playing solo on the big private Atlases. What I have found is that this game has tons of potential, but it is squandered by an out of touch dev team and player-base. Starting with the devs, as I have mentioned in other posts do not understand Atlas as a product. In short, the devs are treating the game as "Ark: PIRATES!" At the current time there is too much focus on raiding, farming, and basing. This game should be about trading, fleet battles, exploration, and story content. Players should not be waking up to whole fleets missing and all their loot gone. I feel that formal war declarations, offline protection, and options for safe-zone building. (The BEST part about private servers is having your own kick ass bungalow in the freeport.) is imperative for the future of Atlas. As for the players, a lot of you need to also understand Atlas... Atlas is an MMO, a survival MMO... but an MMO none the less. (Again, this is not "ARK: PIRATES!" ) This game is about exploring, trading, and well.. you don't have to kill EVERY red you see. Posted: 13 Feb 2019 05:52 AM PST Do all the improved reload speed/aiming etc skills on cannons transfer to crew when you're captaining a ship? Like the improved cannon sighting speed, improved cannon reload, etc. or is that ONLY if you're manning a cannon? If I take all the pistol skills in the firearms tree, will that make a comparable damage pistol better than a carb/bluss? Or will a carb still do more damage than the pistol? Any tips for taking down Dragon powerstone? We've got a good strat for Hydra but we will be trying Dragon this weekend on our unofficial server. [link] [comments]
Risks, rewards, and bear cannons Posted: 13 Feb 2019 09:55 AM PST ORP conversations aside, I think one of the most important aspects to engaging PvP gameplay is the risk/reward quotient. Currently, this game is a war of offline sieges because it's simultaneously the most risk adverse and lucrative tactic. When I build my structures I like to take the, "how would I destroy/get into this base if I were an enemy" approach. With the current tools, it's an incredibly frustrating process. I've ultimately concluded there is no offline defense capable of fending off a single bear cannon and a person with a Carbine for any ground base. Let me explain. A bear cannon can hit a base from outside Puckle range. And Puckles are the only automated tool you can somewhat effectively use to defend the exteriors of bases due to the NPC being invulnerable. The only way to fend off a bear cannon assault is by using your own NPC-mounted cannon defense (and a lot of them considering their limited firing angles). However, all it takes is a single carbine to kill the NPCs mounted on the cannons from outside their range and then the attacker goes about their business shredding your base with their bear cannon. It takes weeks for people to establish fortified bases + massive time and effort collecting the goods within the base. And all it takes to deny this work is a few minutes hitting metal nodes. And all the attacker risks is the time it takes to tame a bear and build a cannon. Risk versus reward. I don't know what the best solution is. My immediate thought is why can't more mounted defenses make NPCs invulnerable (when not mounted on ships)? I know the developers mentioned they didn't want this to turn into 1,000 turret bases, which I don't think it would due to the cost and complexity of keeping NPCs active, but still--I get it. Granted, raiding a mega-company's main base should be a monumental task (no, I am not from a mega company). Perhaps cannons mounted on carts should have durability. Pair this with an increase in weight and/or tame carry restriction and now at the very least more resources/time need to be invested by the attackers. What do you think? Are there automated ways to fend off cannon bears with the current tools available to us? Aside from building on a cliff or atop a tame-inaccessible mountain? What changes would even out the risk/reward balance for offline raiding? More penalties for dying inside someone's claim? [link] [comments]

New Explosive Barrels just killed it for me. Posted: 12 Feb 2019 09:19 PM PST It was bad enough that its super easy to PvOffline people's ships in this game now you just made it even easier by allowing explosive barrels to be placed in enemy territory. Good Job, instead of fixing the game you keep making it worse. How about you allow people to dry dock their ships with a 5 min timer and require the ship be backed into the shipyard. That way someone cant just jump on your ship throw an oil jar down and sink a galleon by blowing 1 plank off. Also the fog is a terrible idea right along with your cyclones and vitamins. Yes players love to be punished instead of actually enjoying a game. Anyways coulda been a fun game, but now it feels like a full time job and is maybe fun 5% the time im playing. Thanks devs for increasing HP of Diving Attachment to 12k HP!!!!!! Posted: 12 Feb 2019 03:09 PM PST I noticed this was not explicit in the patch notes. Figured I should share it with everyone. Finally I don't have to carry 3 Diving Attachments in storage for every ship! Thanks for improving the salvage gameplay! [link] [comments] |
