Prefab Construction: Key to Server Stress Reduction?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 05:46 AM PST

Been around the world twice, talked to everybody once. Seen a vidja game or two. Why haven't these guys putting this wonderful game together embraced prefab? I know for most of you this is a taboo word / philosophy, but we're playing an MMO and the lag is real. These poor servers are 70lb lightweights holding up a literal world of artifacts. So, here's a few ideas, maybe you likey.

    Prefab Forts:

Multiple tiers - Small -> Big

Available thru construction tree similar to shipwright

Throw down a husk of a building, w/ building material reqs

Gives a clearer goal for building to large companies, it's very easy to say we need 150k wood stone thatch and get people moving vs I need a whole bunch of foundations / walls / ceilings

    Balancing:

Add a maintenance cost that draws from the inventory of the fort structure

Make a huge footprint based on the size of the fort that forbids the construction of another fort so they cannot be stacked

Instead of nerfing gold to limit a huge amount of turrets to protect bases, embrace forts and only allow various snaps / customizations. This would artificially limit how many turrets you can have.

If a group invests in these, they should be relatively hard to remove / take. Give a clear goal for capturing, whether it's king of the hill for X time uncontested or reducing the structure to rubble.

    Taverns

Embracing an idea I saw somewhere here on reddit @ https://www.reddit.com/r/playatlas/comments/akqwd6/can_we_have_a_tavern_to_store_npc_that_are_not_in/

Allows the storage of X amount of NPCs, and instead of costing gold they generate a set amount if there is a supply of ale / grog / food. Maybe higher quality food / ale grants higher gold generation.

    Balancing:

So that groups don't throw down a ton of taverns to generate gold, the taverns will have a large footprint that forbids stacking multiple.

    Side Note:

It's silly that crews live 24/7 on ships, and they are easy to offline. Give people a reason to store / share their NPCs company wide, and allow you to clearly account for how many you have. This would be a double edged sword because storing your NPCs means you cannot instantly react to PvP which is unrealistic anyway.

    Barns

Allows storage / breeding of tames with the bonus of increased duration of food and possibly a reduction in consumption of said food. Maybe give a huge bonus to breeding, making it actually feasible to breed new animals. Storing an animal would look similar to uploading an animal to an obelisk. Allow fecal matter / wool / milk / eggs to generate for ease of harvesting / farming. This would be a huge win / win, removing a ton of tames from render and all their byproducts would reduce lag a lot.

    Any more ideas?

Something like a farm inside another structure like a fort that gives increased harvest / growth would be cool, maybe a combination barn / farm type structure. All these are wins in my book, they aren't awful looking and would greatly reduce server stress. Another huge benefit is very easy, clear cut goals for companies. We need X amount of materials to make this and this, please keep the farms running, and oh we only have 20 NPCs in the tavern we need to go replace another 10 etc etc

PSA: If you land on the top platform of a lighthouse it will kill you

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 10:12 AM PST

I placed a lighthouse earlier today and whilst gliding back to my base using a glider, I figured I would land on the top balcony area of the lighthouse to take a look.

The moment that my feet landed on it, I started taking damage - about 20% of my health every second. The railing is too high to be able to jump over and it's not possible to climb or grapple the top of the lighthouse, so that resulted in being dead. :(

    Taming/Breeding suggestions

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 09:58 AM PST

It would be really cool to have rare and/or region exclusive varieties of existing creatures. An example would be lions, in most biomes they spawn normally, but in colder biomes they can rarely spawn with a Snow Leopard or Sabertooth skin. Same stats, same mechanics, same creature, but with some visual flare. You could also do Mammoths for Elephants, Hyena for Wolves, maybe even a Kirin for Horses? There's lots of potential for cool variations to mix things up and make vanity taming more nuanced/accessible.

I also think cross breeding would be a lot of fun. Say if you had a max level Lion and Tiger tame, you could crossbreed to get a Liger with increased size, health, and base damage, or if they added Donkeys, crossbreed with a Horse to get a Mule that can move at walking pace even when overencumbered.

Finally, I think a tamers repertoire of tools needs to be expanded, muzzles, halters, traps, lassos, bait, and other items all make sense for us to utilize and have access to in the process of capturing and domesticating such a wide variety of animals.

    Any thoughts?

Now Lawlesses "claims" are more protected than flagged Claims in PvE?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 08:34 AM PST

Lawless protects property for 4 days, but flagged claims only get 3 days between upkeeps, Also no way to tell as an owner if you claim actually has refreshed or not when you pass by, Seems claims seem not always to refresh when your in them,

Lawless has the additional benefit of foundations not blocking spawns.

    Explosive Barrel Meta

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 10:24 AM PST

Explosive barrel meta is going to ruin this game. Once people figure out you can place them not only on lawless next to and on people's foundations but you can also place them next to someones buildings in claimed areas or roll a bear + cannon up a hill then its gg. People will say oh that only can be a "thing" if your offline. Well it only takes 3-4 barrels to pancake a 6x6x6 area into dust. You can be in someones base in 1-2 minutes if you know what your doing. Barrels melt stone, the 2.5x damage increase was a joke. If you expect small tribes to play on lawless which a lot do. You can expect their bases to melt to constant grief. not even going to get into how hard protecting a ship yard is against these things on claimed or lawless....You can make 100 barrels in 30mins with 2 people easily

    Stone Walls and their cost

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 03:56 AM PST

To get this out of the way I do understand that my puddle deep knowledge of game development and balancing a multiplayer game isn't really worth that much, but i had to give this a try.

I love atlas, even with all the hate it gets, I love the game. It is a platform for imagination to run wild. I play on a RP server with traders, slavers, and architects. Never before have I enjoyed the ability to play an MMO like it. One element that I enjoyed was the ability to create structures freely and easily, have the ability to create grand structures, such as, palaces and vaults. But the recent stone patch has decimated that vision. I can see why developers did it, but I still find myself sad that it happened. If you had really wanted their to be a challenge in creating a tough wall, you could've created a metal reinforced wall or anything like that. The stone wall was a common thing in the age of sail. But now in atlas, it's a challenge to make a dog house with stone. I have to travel for so long to get organic paste. Never mind that if i want to leave my patchwork wood/stone hut I need cannons and guns to survive. (Thanks to the three alpha wolfs outside) Cannons and guns wouldn't be a problem if each wall didn't cost a flintlock pistol, and half a cannon. And if I want to break into someone else's wooden shack I need to have the explosives I can't make when all my organic paste is holding together my house with the strength of a bottle of Elmer's glue. Just let me build a castle goddamnit! I'm broke and can't afford organic paste.

How feasible is it to build a trapping ship, like the trapping raft we used in Ark?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:44 AM PST

So I want to make trapping tames a little easier and I have found that sometimes building traps on every new island I come to with new tames I want can be tricky to do with people placing foundations and pillars everywhere. So has any1 outfitted a Schooner or Brig solely for trapping new tames?

I know that you can't put ramps all the way down to the water, but I have found ramps on shores that people have left and though those might be used with a trap on the main deck of your ship or just build a decent ramp on a shore yourself that's high enough to reach the ramp on the side of you ship and then you'd have yourself a mobile trap.

Tho I'd have concerns on if you could make them big enough for elephants/rhinos/geraffies or maybe even shieldhorns and Razortooths. Also would they be able to damage the ship as they thrash around in the trap as you knock down the health to bola them.

Any thoughts on this, if it's viable, building ideas all Appreciated.

Glider hotbar switching to gain altitude intended?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:53 AM PST

If you swap your glider between hotbar slots while flying, you can air-jump to gain altitude, reopen your wings, and fly forever. Is this an intended mechanic? An oversight? It seems very broken.

Why do I get stuck on other people's boats?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 08:06 AM PST

I've noticed if I jump on other people's boats I can't move anymore. It's like I become part of their boat. If I'm lucky I'm able to get off by just luckily floating off.

Does anyone else have this issue and is there a way around it?

Claims not working exploit allowing enemies to build on company only claims.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 09:24 AM PST

Just got news that chinese came back to our base and because the claim system is fucked they were able to exploit and put a cannon down and raid our main base and kill all our tames while we were at work/school. all flags are set to company only yet they found an exploit and still were able to build on our land. GG game is trash

Is the game worth buying? All of the posts here lately seem to be about bugs/glitches/complaints.

Captain's Log 19 acknowledges the problem but offers no vision on how to solve it

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 07:15 PM PST

Reading the first two lines of the log, I had the impression that the devs finally understood the main problem with this game. But shortly after, they proceeded with just reassuring the top companies and offering them new useless content...

Your priorities are not in the right place.

First of all, if there are people who need to be incentivized to stay in the game or come back are the smaller groups who thought this was going to be a pirate game not ark 2.0 (in terms of mega tribes and alliances).

What vision have you offered? Nothing. Just promises that you'll make it more fun, that you probably won't end up keeping.

" Incentivize companies to neutralize their territories": No this is not the solution. The solution is to incentivize companies to NOT claim more land than they need. There are several mega companies right now, that have empty islands. Most new comers are complaining about the lack of availability of claims to build on. How do you expect your game to have an inflow of new players if they log in and find no where to build on and log off?

Make overextension have a serious penalty, whether it's maintenance cost or anything that discourages companies from claiming land that they don't actually need. The tax vision you had from the start is just not worth it. This is a pirate game, not a government/political simulator.

Limit alliances. Don't make this ARK 2.0 where alliances after the server transfer ruined the game entirely. Most ships should be red to pirates not blue.

    Flip the Script

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 12:14 PM PST

I started to post this as part of another thread but started to think this could be a stand-alone idea to push forward.

One of the main problems with the economy of this game is that it doesn't cost to place a claim and/or hold a claim however you can make money/resources from a claim if it's rented or harvested.

Give claims a cost just like in the real world. You pay for land to purchase and you either continue to pay/spend money on it or you rent it out and make more money on the rent then you pay out.

This would make some claimable areas with good resources a great value while it would be almost worthless to hold others as the cost would drain you. Even large companies would now have to make sure the books balance or they start losing land. This could turn the tide on large groups wiping smaller groups as they would need the customers/tenants to pay for the land.

Now you start to form more natural alliances and enemies. The fights over land wouldn't be as much for sheer size and quantity of claims but more the quality of the claim. Big alliances or groups would want smaller groups to come and to protect them so they stay and pay for the land so it's not a burden for the overall larger groups.

This could also get some of the smaller to mid-sized groups off of the lawless islands where they can be used for more of what was intended.

So just an idea and upvote or not but along with some of the other really good ideas on here lately I think just this simple adjustment in the economy could have a great impact on the game and how it's played.
