The game will die if.... (oh really?)

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 05:00 AM PST

It's funny seeing people say "the game will die if... [Insert whatever some mega companies don't want to see here]".

Because honestly, looking at the player tracker, seeing that a couple of servers just have few hundred players online right now, I gotta say it's already dead. I think the better approach for developers is to focus on how to bring back most of the players that stopped playing and listen to the community as a whole, rather than trying to please the two mega alliances that are left playing.

Now is the time to make the needed radical changes, whether they'll be upset or not, it doesn't matter. You have nothing left to lose to be honest. Your focus now is how to revive the playerbase. If more limitations to zerging/alliances are needed, and if a wipe is needed, just go ahead with it. I don't think your numbers can mathematically go any lower anyway (since they're pretty close to 0). But they can actually go up if you make some extensive good changes.

Just remember again and again, that zerging is what killed your game, in every aspect, from ridiculously unfair pvp/griefing to taking over the entire map that no land was left for new comers. So unless you really make crippling limitations to zerging, and make this game more about medium-sized groups with less allies, more space for new comers and more fair pvp, your numbers won't improve anytime soon.

EUPVP 26/2 When even the megas have had enough.

There was one early-access survival game that recovered from an 80% player loss (hint: it wasn't Ark)

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 10:21 AM PST

    It was Rust.

The decline wasn't as fast - about eight months to go from 58,000 players to 11,000, not two months like Atlas - but during its first year, Rust lost more than 80% of its peak players. Thanks almost entirely to good word-of-mouth, the game recovered and, two years after it launched, set a new record at 61,000 concurrent players.

Where is Rust today, five years after launch? It's between #5-#10 most played game on Steam with an all-time record of 85,000 concurrent players set last month.

Atlas has a few things going for it that Rust didn't. The scope of the game is much larger - not only the size of the map, but the existence of a skill tree, sailing and taming should give the game broader appeal. Rust didn't have any formal grouping system until 2018, and it's still limited to 8 players in a group. To this day, Rust does a map wipe once a month.

But Rust has one thing that Atlas doesn't: a highly-respected developer. Garry Newman was a legend even before Rust, and Facepunch Studios has shown itself to be one of the most competent, committed, transparent and responsive developers in the industry.

Wildcard, on the other hand, has a reputation for being stubborn, arrogant children who actively pander to streamers and large tribes. They regularly decide they know better than their players and make changes that go against the community. The fundamentals of their game are riddled with bugs they mostly ignore, which makes it feel like a low-quality product.

It's fairly easy for the end-user to see that Wildcard is motivated by money, while Facepunch is motivated by making good games.

The only hope I see for Atlas is a fundamental change in the way Wildcard does business. Rust's lead developer plays Rust every weekend and it shows. I doubt anyone at Wildcard has played Atlas for more than a few hours since it launched.

Alliance/Coalition Influence Map [26.02.2019] NA PVP

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 04:57 AM PST

After reading Reddit and Discord here is the list of common problems and suggested solutions.

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 08:09 AM PST

All of the below have their pros and cons and are only designed to address current problems and not what may or may not happen later.

    • Problem: Naked zerg claim rush

Suggestion: Make dropping a claim flag cost something, gold, materials. The placement cost will increase at a rate per flag dropped per period of time, hopefully forcing for an actual gradual progression through the island and not random drops.

    • Problem: Offline claiming territory with structures and foundation wiping them.

Suggestion: When someone successfully declaims my land, any structure in the affected region inherits "lawless" properties with say a 2 day timer. And even if the enemy claim goes up, the structure maintains the "lawless" status until the period passes. This would minimize the foundation wipes making them very resource intensive and will force an actual siege and at least will leave the base intact after the raid.

    • Problem: Offline ship destruction

Suggestion: Ships can be "returned" into the appropriate size shipyard and the protection can be purchased of a particular shipyard with some conditions. The cost will depend on the size of the ship, the cost will go up exponentially for each additional shipyard "under protection" as well as for each hour under protection. There is an activation timer. The shipyard will gain immunity only after an hour from protection activation (or "locking" the shipyard with the ship in it). The "unlocking" of the ship takes an hour as well. The key is to make it trivial for 1-5 ships and very expensive for larger fleets. The ship must be free of resources (inducing gold and BPs) and NPCs need to be removed.

    • Problem: Megas fast travel

Suggestion: Harsher company max travel limit reached on travelling between zones (should not affect beds on ships)

    • Problem: Massive land grabs by mega companies

Suggestion: Atlas is a copy of a real world. Land grab is a part of the game. Instead of fighting the inevitable a better renting/leasing of land needs to be introduced. The system should allow the land lord and the renter to be able to defend the land. I yet to find a good solution of any of the forums.

    • Cool Idea: Devs need to start filming big fleet engagements in God mode and post them on YouTube. Only a very small percentage of ppl actually get to enjoy those cool moments. Similar to raids in other MMOs.

Please let me know if I have missed any other major problems.

    Thank you

    Pirates vs officers

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 12:01 PM PST

Just shooting this out there while i take a shit.

    Kinda like alliance vs horde.

Some freeports are for pirates others are for officers.

Just like wow make these raidable.

Give them a bank to store your goodies.

MAKE THEM RAIDABLE. In world of warcraft, stormwind is raidable.

This would add a HUGE awesome factor to the game imo. Dump is done, good luck have fun discussing.

You know Yi Tiao Chong, even with this being a PvP game and even though this is a survival game, all I wanted as a female gamer was pretty bears and wolves to tame. Go suck a big wee wee, find your own Chinese servers to play on. :C

You never EVER kill a women's tames, now you have her fury to deal with. SEE YOU IN HELL! ( ͡° ͜Ê– ͡ – ✧)

Yes, I agree, fix the claim flags system

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 11:34 AM PST

Claim flags should be restricted to people capable of defending them. A number of players should be allocated to each tier of claim flag allowances. Just like the ship cap.

There should be groups of claim flags open to groups of a certain size.

Solo players, tiny companies should be allowed ZERO claims. Makes zero sense that claims are allowed for unrealistic situations.

    Just as a quick example:

    • 0-25 crew: 0 flags
    • 25-50 crew: 25 flags
    • 50-75 crew: 50 flags
    • etc...

Etc. The more people your company has, the more flags you are allowed. The fewer people your company has, the fewer that are allowed.

Doesn't make sense that people who can barely hold a fob in lawless should be allowed to claim territory.

    This game needs more High-sec.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 03:19 PM PST

If you have played Eve Online then you know there is levels of space security. High-sec with mostly safe PvE and trade happens. Low-sec where random PvP and ganks happen but has better PvE rewards and resources for your risk. Then lastly there is null where player own the area and fight over the best resources. I think one of the problems with Atlas is freeports make for bad high-sec. There should be stuff for players to do. Places for them to live and store some resources. Not everyone out in null fighting for to live till all is owned by Mega corps, which it should and will but that dose not leave space for other play styles. Freeports and lawless should be for play styles that don't like the huge wars and mass land ownership.

24h timer to build on new claims unless its your first. Claims no longer transfer in a merge.

Bitter end to a long night... Claiming system needs a rework

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 04:26 PM PST

I know I'm beating a dead horse with this one, but hear me out. Last night myself and 2 tribe mates successfully pushed back a large scale attack on our base over the course of a few hours from 3 Chinese beta tribes. They brought over a Galleon with a 5 bears and about 15 people. We had logged on to find they were already halfway through their raid, all boats sunk and a few tames killed.

No issues thus far. We jumped on some mortars and bears and fought back. We managed to kill all their bears and drain them of all their raiding gear, losing nothing other than a couple of our own lives to sniping.

After they realised they had lost, they called in more Chinese tribes to assist. We continually pushed them back even though we were heavily outnumbered. At this point, we had more sets of armour and weapons then storage boxes! All going good so far!

What happens next is the bitter part...

For the next 8 hours, we had over 20 naked Chinese running through our lands slapping claims everywhere. We couldn't man the mortars and run around the island protecting the claims. As we have jobs and had to wake up within the next few hours, we were forced to log off in as many bases as possible to protect our home. Log on to find that pretty much every single base had been claimed, excluding half the main (sounds insane, but half the base was within their claim and owned it).

I know it's a part of the game and there are many flaws in what we done and could've done, but at the end of the day, a raid/defence shouldn't be finalised by who can stay on the longest to slam down claim flags. We won the battle, lost the war. All in all, it was a blast! Hours of fun defending!

Claim system works. It just took a while to catch up from last change.

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 09:33 AM PST

    Goodbye karma :-(

And I am not saying there are not bugs.....

Around a month ago they introduced the change that increased the timer on claim flags. This followed The Great Claim War of the 4 day timers. This new change caused the majority of flags to now have a 23 day timer. For the next 23 days it was almost impossible to find a claim. People bitched hard, but I don't need to tell Reddit about that....

Over the past week I have watched claims come up left and right. I will refrain from mentioning how many I have added, no telling how bad that would get me downvoted. Let me just say that I am now having to pick and choose which claims I get, since some take 4 hours. I am a patient man, but the one on the beach with the metal is only 2 hours.....

I watch people complain about the claim system, while me and my buddy are taking over islands. Yeh, it is just me and one buddy. Yeh, I said islands. Plural. If there are no claims available, how are we able to do this? I mean, I could say how we are not lazy and actively look, but that would just upset some people and cause me even more downvotes. I guess it is better to blame a working system and get upvotes. Go with the herd...

See, I feel bad for Jat. Let me first mention how he probably ignores my tweets. One or two I have sent him may have been negative....... The guy loves the game though and he wants it to be badass. One day we bitch about one thing, next another. How can they tell if a feature is even close to working if we do not give it time to play out? Balance takes time.

There are plenty of claims out there. Quit following the herd and believing there is not. The claim system may have bugs, but the core feature is working fine. Maybe drop it down to a max of a week? I am in a 2 man crew and we have plenty of land for resources and taxes. Half of what we have was obtained in the past week as those original claims have ran out. Downvote me to hell, but this is the truth. Find something new to bitch about please.

And Jat, sorry for the bad tweets. I know you are trying man and I love the core game. Fix it up a bit more and it will be awesome.

    Better Leader Board Proposal

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 01:53 PM PST

The current leader board system sucks to put it lightly, it runs off of how many claims a company has, anyone can spam claims and all it is doing is further encouraging the atlas equivalent of pillar spamming in ark.
I propose a better system and hopefully the dev's see it and take it into consideration, what if in PVP the leader board was a tally of company wide kills, and in PvE servers leader boards worked off of how many boss kills a company has. now i understand that this way does not cater to the small tribe players, but lets be honest with each other, this game is not meant for the solo/small tribe players to begin with.
