Lots of feedback & thoughts - Taking a break from the game.

    Posted: 17 May 2019 07:29 AM PDT

    Hi there,

I will post my experiences and feedback as a mainly PvE player in a 2 man company(remember that for later), that tried out PvP for a month, ~900 hours /played. You might agree or disagree with what I have to say and all opinions are welcome, I really liked the game and think it has immense potential so I'm willing to spend some time to give feedback and how I personally believe it could move forward.

    ---POSITIVES:

    1) The core design and setting of the game really sets it up for endless adventures and infinite content, "lifestyle" gameplay as it's called these days where you can always log and have something fun and enjoyable to do.

    2) Being a long time hardcore WoW player, I lacked the social aspect of gaming, where you would have to actually talk to people to do things, Atlas on the other hand, even with a low player count, never made me feel alone; I would always see people sailing or talking about stuff they want to do in-game, together - which is great!

    3) Even if the map is split between grids(instances basically) it really feels like a big sandbox MMO where every grid is different depending on the players' personalities and what the players have built there, not a single moment of boredom passed me by when exploring other people's islands.

    4) Exploration was fun, as they've done a pretty good job when it comes to finding different materials on each grid - I especially remember the 1st time we went to polars and hit an iceberg, we lost 2 front planks and had to rush to land and farm a few materials while being chased by yetis to rebuilt our ship, then we built a few ramps and tamed penguins ontop of a mountain, it gave both of us a pretty strong adrenaline rush until the moment we were safe.

    5) PvE naval combat feels great when you have broadside cannons and don't try to cheese it.

    6) If you decide to properly survive instead of resetting vitals every now and then the game suddenly becomes really immersive, and eating a cake or 2 every few hours isn't really a big deal!

    7) Building is great and also has a lot of potential further down the road with more cosmetic stuff.

    8) The end-game PvE content was overall really scary and actually felt a lot like raiding, with a few negative points explained later.

    9) From my little experience in PvP you can easily get adrenaline rushes from simple fights, PvP naval combat was really fun and anything that doesn't involve melee weapons or bears running with swivels was smooth.

    10) Grinding materials actually feels rewarding because you use them on something cool(unlike WoW for example where I farm 1h before raid to spam pots and flasks, just because I have to)

    11) The game allows you to choose from a big variety of playstyles(eg breeders,tamers,captains,builders,explorers...etc)

There's a lot more minor things that made me enjoy Atlas, but I won't be listing them here. Now let's move on to the negatives, and things that I think could be done better - bear in mind that the stuff I list in the negatives have NOT made me take a break from the game there's only 1 reason which I will list last. I will start off with the PvE side of the game as that's what we were mainly focused on. With every negative paragraph, I will also write my suggestions on how it could be executed better, by all means, I'm no game designer so I'm not absolute either, I just provide some thoughts from conversations that took place while playing the game.

    --NEGATIVES

    1) The end-game content, while really immersive, is unfortunately imbalanced. The kraken 2.0 fight is too easy for a coordinated and prepared 5 man group, and can be cheesed even more with more people. The powerstone experience was better as we didn't cheese it and actually fought our way to the cave with grenades, kiting and high lvl tames, and killed the hydra with ballistas, but it can also be cheesed with a zerg.

My suggestion here would be to create 5,10,X-people instanced zones in which people could group and bring their ships from a party of ships, and fight whatever things the devs have put there, similar to how dungeons work in other games, but with an Atlas touch. That way people would not be able to cheese it, devs would be able to balance them much easier, and servers wouldn't crash when 50 people get on H8 to do the kraken.

    2) Questing. Some quests are straight up pointless time sinks(Looking at you Ghost ship and giant squid!) as the only hard part is sailing for hours and hours on end(and yes we've been looking for the ghost ship for over 16 hours). I believe the devs could get really creative with quests in Atlas, I saw some great suggestions on another post some day, like escorting NPCs from freeports, getting kill quests that tell you to go look to X grid for a bandit camp and grab their stuff, and the list goes on.

    3) The PvE Claim system. Right now it partially works because the game has a small playerbase and not many people fight over islands, but when the game launches properly and gains more players, people will become settlers on a claimed island for 24h, then foundation spam the whole island safely to block all resources rendering the island useless, forcing the owner to quit, or farm on another island.

My solution to this, would be to force "settlers" to be allies with the owners in order to have indestructible buildings, and have a 30 day decay timer in case the owner breaks the alliance so he won't be able to steal their stuff, but if the allies break the alliance they should only be given 2-3 days to pack up and leave. That way everyone will be happy because visitors will also be able to build traps to tame or ramps to reach treasures, but the owner will be able to clean up afterwards, you will still have settlers with no way to grief, and the owners won't have to log on every single day and look around for griefers. For this to work though, you need to remove alliance cap on PvE servers, as many have asked before me - I see no reason why this would break things.

    4) PvP overall. I believe it's in a pretty good spot if you put cheaters aside, small companies can work it out and enjoy the game, and big companies can do their thing aswell, noone's left out(I would like some more input from people playing mainly on PvP though). I would love to see a mobile base ship with no fire power that you could always return to if you were ever wiped though, I know that's a nightmare to balance, but it's one of the few MINOR things that kept me away from PvP in this game.

    5) Cheating. Seriously. Come on. I'm not saying to suspend people using an AHK autofire script to farm on their giraffe because they suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome, but it shouldn't take weeks to ban people that literally break the game.

    6) Optimization. I believe the game needs some kind of structure limit per island, I don't think you can expect people to have 2k$ PCs to be able to play the game, I have first hand experience from IRL friends with mediocre setups that can run most games on medium to high graphics; that can't even do 5 steps without stuttering on atlas. I have a somewhat highend PC aswell but everytime I have to render our 9x9 large gate base I'm getting crazy stutters.

That's all for the negatives including some minor stuff that I really don't mind like losing tames to mesh or ships sinking from random factors.

All these don't matter to me though, the one true reason that's making me take a break from the game is drums playing:

    The game's too slow.

What I mean by that? Well..

Many of you probably have to work, have school, children, etc... I have work and school, that leaves me with ~3hours/day free time, I can spend around 1-2 per day, and ~4 on weekends on gaming.

On PvE after having done almost all content during easter break, I'm just left with discovery points. There's nothing worth doing to keep me playing anymore other than DPs. But that's boring. Why?

Because it takes too long to sail, it takes too long to travel, it takes too long to put food on my 6 larders and 9 feeding troughs. It takes too long to farm 100 cannonballs and go kill a SOTD or two that would chase me during low wind periods, it takes too long to repair, it takes too long to farm the gold to sustain NPC crew for my 10 cannons and 3 sails, and by the time I do all that and many more micromanaging stuff - time's up. I have spent my little time/day basically doing chores and boring content, while the game has potential for some crazy content - and all that with 2 people playing. In general, I feel it takes too long to even start "playing", be it PvE or PvP.

Keep in mind I'm not complaining or asking the devs to decrease the time needed for all these things, maybe Atlas is just not for me, but I strongly believe the average gamer nowadays is in a similar spot and can't put in 6h+/day to do something, so if the playercount is to ever increase, they really need to consider this. We tried joining a bigger company, and just tag around - but that felt boring as we felt like cogs in the wheel.

With that said, I'll be around playing other games and reading patch notes and hoping for the best.

Just my 2 cents, and I really hope this game succeeds at some point, have fun boys and girls!

    Remove guillotine's EXP boost ASAP

    Posted: 17 May 2019 12:45 PM PDT

The EXP denial for 24 hours is enough for getting back at players as incentive.
I think this should be hotfixed right away whilst working internally to continue doing what ever devs plan on doing for it's relief to players.

The damage is so catastrophic and there's now no easy solution to undo the stat padding of players and worse, shareable items like boats and guns with 100+% crafting skill.
The exploit is removed but there are still people leveling to their caps over the week suddenly.

    Let's talk about crabs

    Posted: 17 May 2019 09:19 AM PDT

Why were they introduced with these terrible mechanics? I understand its a ported creature from ARK, but why even bring it into Atlas with hideous mechanics with little to none counter-play.

    1. Get rid of it's jumping.
    2. Mini game to escape its grasp.
    3. Slower on land, faster on/in water.

    Thoughts?

    Anyway to unstuck crewmates?

If the Devs wont do anything about Wendigo, lets community wipe them.

    Posted: 16 May 2019 02:16 PM PDT

Just keep attacking them and anyone willing to help defend them.

Day after day, no farming to replenish what they lose a true battle of attrition.

Depending on interest start dropping war tokens, etc.

Tile Transfer Crashing / Extreme lag entering servers. Just me?

    Posted: 16 May 2019 02:42 PM PDT

Well after 1000 hours played in Atlas and on top of dealing with Chinese hackers on a daily basis I can now barely play the game... Out of no where my game is crashing almost every tile transfer. On top of the crash whenever I enter a new tile I have 255 ping and unplayable lag for about 2-3 minutes. After a few minutes it seems to regulate (although not all the time, sometimes i have to leave and re-enter the game / server) and I drop to my normal ping of 89 then the game is playable. I've completely reinstalled the game, updated drivers, etc etc.

These are huge problems for me. I am pvp ship captain and I spend most my time on the seas. If i cant safely tile transfer i cant really play the fucking game.

I wanted to see if anyone else here is having the same issue. I could open a ticket but lets get real.

    -Hesh of Tempest

    PS. Ban Wendigo already wtf.
