Freeport Ideas - Safe Harbors and Shipyards

    Posted: 10 Feb 2020 04:09 AM PST

Wrote this up as a message to Grapeshot.
Hope they take the suggestion, nonetheless, posting it here in hopes that other people request similar things.

An idea came to me recently after my base was raided before I could fully get set up.

Preferably, I would like to just sail the ocean and not have a base because, in my opinion, it's too much work too defend land.

    • Freeport Safe Harbors

Add a set of ports (5-10 docks on each port) on the islands in every Freeport.
Players simply sail up to a dock, "press E for more options" on their ship to tie their ship to the dock, then log off.

Instead of their ship decaying in the Freeport, it is stored in the cloud.
When the player that docked the ship logs back in, the ship is re-generated, allowing the player to go about their adventures instead of endlessly harvesting until Armageddon.
If another ship is dock or is occupying the space, the player's ship will simply log in to the next nearest dock.
For sake of fairness, only companies of 4 or less players can be allowed to have access to the Freeport Safe Harbors.

Players who left the company in the past 24 hours still count towards the Companies total member count, to prevent exploiting.

    • Freeport Shipyards

In addition to this Freeport Safe Harbor feature, include a series of Small Shipyards, each with a building attached to it.
Each building will include a Smithy, Forge, Tannery, Loom, Mortal & Pestle, Cooking Pot, Campfire, Bed and Water Barrel.

To use these Shipyards, the player just has to walk up to an available one, and deposit gold inside a chest.
That player/Company now has access to that Shipyard for as long as they can afford the rent.

Some Large Shipyards could be included as well, although I'm not sure on the balance with that one.
To prevent large Companies from taking advantage, only allow Solo Players to have access to these.

This would be easily exploitable however, so to counter, ships built in the Freeport Shipyards are unclaimed when a player joins a Company or creates a Company.
The player can then reclaim the ship, but would have to wait for the capture to complete.

Adding these features would make the game far more playable for the solo players and small groups.
If the game can become playable for solo players and small groups, then the playerbase will grow.
If only large groups can play the game, then there is no pool of players for the large groups to recruit from, so eventually the large groups fade out, leaving no one.

I should lose my ship to Ships of the Damned or other pirates while out on the seas, not when my ship is still in the Shipyard.
That's essentially what stops people from playing the game.
Why play if you can't keep your progress because you have to sleep?
Sure there's the peace time on captured islands, however for the solo player that might as well not matter.

There are some larger tribes that do allow other players to build on their islands, except I would rather not have to rely on random strangers who may have a change of heart while I sleep because they decided they don't like me.
Frankly, I'd rather not have to build a base, but at some point, you have to make a damned shipyard and find a place to park your ship, which is where my solutions come in.

If anybody has any better ideas, my ears are wide open.

Has anyone had issues loading Atlas? I get to the main screen with the two pistols and I can't login at all... It says press "A" but that doesn't do anything. Anyone have any recommendations on how I can fix it?
