    Make Sailing more intresting [Suggestion]

Travelling long distances in atlas can be REALLY boring, especially when travelling to far region. This makes people stay closer to their home regions and divides the map into invisible "sections". And the problem with this is that a lot of big tribes in proximity will make alliances and will not do much PVP within that region. Also preventing smaller ones to attack each other, as they don't want to deal with people making too much "noise" around their bases. Therefore people will get bored really fast as they "cant be bothered" to sail 2 hours (this happened to me more than once when our tribe tried to raid further away) just to spend 2-3 more hours on the raid, and again.... sail another 2 hours to get back to their base. Total time around 6 hours for a small raid. This is not fun and it kills the game. People do not go too far to do pvp or to do trading, they can't do these within their region either and eventually get bored and leave (had this issue a lot).

I have a proposed solution that could work. Basically add jet streams (winds that go across the globe) and Ocean Currents (rivers on the ocean surface). These would form some natural "fast tracks" that are not affected by wind, and provide maximum thrust. They would span across many regions in mostly one direction. So now if someone wants to go to some further grids, they could plan their routes to make use of these tracks and get to their destinations faster. This would make sailing interesting as you have to plan ahead and be prepared to take risks. The risks are for example if you are going fully loaded, there might be a "pirate" ship patrolling along the track for possible prey. To counter maybe you could take a battle ship too and have a good ship PVP. Also these streams would kinda pull you towards the centre at all times, so you could take a tea break while the currents are taking you on your journey. The pull towards the centre would not be too strong, so people can enter and exit wherever they like.

A quick illustration I made can be seen below. I am sure it is not perfect, but I think a system like this could potentially make sailing at least a little more fun or at least less time consuming.

I based this idea on real world occurrences that are quite amazing. Here are some links for the people who are interested.

    Your experiences in PVE

    Posted: 31 May 2019 12:23 PM PDT

I have been wondering how the experience is in PVE servers and why you play them, aside from the default,.. don't like pvp etc.. . What is the economy like? What experiences have you had on official servers? Trading? What to do with the excess gold you have without needing to man cannon towers and mortar towers? How is the overall community, welcoming, trash talking? Is there ever accepted war declarations?? (this is one im most interested in, as it could be very interesting if 2 companies come together and fight within a set ruleset, maybe for contested land claims, other RP reasons)

Just interested to see what its like on the other side i guess, and maybe one day have a gander over there to experience some of it myself

The main reason why I personally see they not to be as fun, as there is no risk.. A small force from our company took 2 ships out down south to do some whaling, (1 whaling schooner, 1 armoured brig to deal with SOTD and ward of any aggression) it was sucessful, but coming back we had reports of hostile activity within our home grid, so we had to plan a route to get home, that would not take us straight into the fray, and get round the hostilities and keep our gold safe....

I could be wrong with there being more risk, but thats the biggest off putter for me right now so would love to know your experiences

Alliance/Coalition Influence Map [31.05.2019] NA [COLONIES] PVP

    Posted: 31 May 2019 09:33 AM PDT

What's the best way to protect chase cannons (cannons on the front of your ship)?

    Posted: 31 May 2019 10:41 AM PDT

I'm considering making a chase brig in the not too distant future, but I'm worried about the cannons.

The cannons, as I'm currently intending to place them, would sit in two rows on the front of the brig, on top of wood ceilings. First row would be on ceilings placed on half walls at the very front of the ship. Next row would be on ceilings placed on full sized walls. I want to keep my profile low to make it harder for them to be hit - or at least that's my current design.

I'm very worried that I'm going to lose my cannons early in combat since the wood ceilings they'd rest on have such low health (4k for a common), my expensive cannons will then be destroyed, and my boat will be left impotent.

Does anyone have a reasonably low weight design that would significantly increase the survivability of medium cannons on the front of a ship? Anyone have a lot of experience with forward cannon ship types and protecting the cannons and the ceilings they're placed on?

The ship's use case is a fighting fleet brig. Its not a solo boat so I expect to have other players around to help protect my flanks and rear.

Here are the ways I've come up with to protect them:

    • Use high tier ceilings (will be doing this)
    • Use high tier cannons (will be doing this)
    • Choose cannons BPs that have reasonably high durability as well as high damage, rather than just maximizing for damage (will be doing this).
    • Pack the cannons on the front of the boat such that they mostly cover the ceilings to minimize the damage that gets through to the vulnerable ceilings (plan on doing this).
    • Use half walls to keep the cannon structure's profile reasonably low, to ensure that shots are missed (plan on doing this).
    • Use ramps above and two the sides of the back row of cannons and ceilings above the cannons to absorb volleys that come in through the sides (planning on doing this)

That's all I currently have, but I'm curious as to whether there are more tricks that I can attempt to ensure that this will work well.

My understanding is that you can't place ceilings over cannons or the cannons will impact those ceilings. I assume this is correct.

    Any advice is much appreciated.

    Boat/Tame problem

    Posted: 31 May 2019 02:10 PM PDT

Friends. I find my game randomly freezing and then closing shortly after. My pc doesnt freeze it is just the game and it only happens in atlas. When atlas does close im not given any form of error code or anything of the sort. This closing of the program happens rarely when im running around but is constantly a problem when im on a tame or on a boat. Just being on a boat or a swivel as well as when im driving. Leading me to not be able to participate in pvp on a boat or tame or really in general.

I have been playing since launch and this has not been a problem until the last week or two. Ive tried reinstalling 2 times. Deleting the local and log files. Changing server tiles. Graphic settings. Ive no idea what else to do. Any ideas? Is the a crash log or something that atlas creates that i can view to see what is actually causing the crash? There doesnt appear to be a technical section on the forums so no idea what to do =/

Large Cannons are useless, with numbers

    Posted: 30 May 2019 01:04 PM PDT

I originally liked the diversity having two cannon types made in the meta. Large cannons did eventually become dominant and deserve a nerf but now that they are limited to gunports I believe they should be buffed again.

    Damage:

Currently a prim medium cannon on a level 1 boat does right at 1900 damage to a plank. A prim large cannon does 2095 damage or 10% more damage and takes twice the time to reload. Therefore a medium cannon can do 3800 damage in the same time frame as a large cannon. Or 55% lower dps then a medium cannon.

    Weight:

The two medium balls used to get this damage weigh 4 as opposed to the 7 of the large and the medium weighs 100 as opposed to 140 when placed on the boat. So overall mediums weight 30%ish less.

So stat wise larges are shit. They do have further range slightly higher splash however with them being restricted to gunports these should be heavy hitters. I don't think they should be buffed to where there dps is in line with that of the medium cannon, or they will just take over the meta again. It should be a tactical choice that provides some variety to builds not a "this one is objectively better" situation. A simple damage buff to bring it from the 55% of the dps of medium cannons to more around 70-75% is needed. This would be around reverting the initial 30% damage nerf of the large cannons. What do you guys think?

These values were gained by shooting a level 1 brig with a level 1 brig using primitive cannons. Damaged was measured after each shot on a single plank.

Is it possible mediums are splashing the plank they hit?

Defense in Atlas is a joke

    Posted: 30 May 2019 05:37 PM PDT

For a game about boats and sea battles, a company spends the majority of their time, if the are not a mega clan, having to build and defend their bases from aggressive mega clans that just want to destroy your shit because they can. Normally this would be fine, build up solid defenses that take time to get through and if its done right they will never get to the heart of your base.

Land defense is a joke, it doesnt matter how much you build or how well you build it, the only thing an attacker needs is a canon bear and a midget to render any puckle, swivel, canon trap, useless. The swivel are actually good but are really limited on range so you cover them with a puckle, but the puckle range is barely any better and any bear with a canon can ou trange them. Useless. Then you have to consider how incredibly easy it is to just grenade down a STONE structure. Grenades are not only very easy to make but extremely light and one person can carry several dozen at once. Even at just under 400 dmg per, when you can spam them it means nothing. They need a nerf, make them heavy at the least.

While the canon bear is basically the one tool to do it all in a raid, buffing puckles range could potentially fix the problem along with getting rid of a cart able to gain ship reload speed buffs. This would help with base defense building and would give it a chance because as it is now, there is zero chance to defend a base for upwards of 9 hours.
